How do you learn to be confident? is a question I’ve been asked over and over. The answer is: I've spent my whole life in training.
I was trained growing up how to be confident by my father, a Dallas Police Officer. He took the knowledge he was constantly acquiring from his occupation and applied it to how he raised us. On the flip side of that training, was my Mom, an amazing woman full of love and compassion for others, starting with her family. She taught us that love is important, without that the instincts training from my Dad would have been only half as effective. She taught us that EACH of us (me, my two brothers and two sisters) were unique, Fiercely Cared For and not only LOVED but that each of us had a purpose, starting in our Family, extending to our Friends, our Community and so on.
My Dad didn’t tell me: "Deborah – this is how you become confident, do this, this and this." It was a mix of different things-
Not to be afraid.
To be aware of my surroundings
To listen and really HEAR what people were saying to me
To always do things for myself, not to expect someone else to do it for me
It was also about knowing what NOT to do. Both of my parents showed us that our choices have effects on others, but most importantly, on ourselves.
I use the word “trained” because training is different than teaching. When you are taught something, you are presented with information, you learn it, and move on. With training, you live it. You incorporate it into your life, and build on it. It becomes a part of who you are. Confidence becomes a part of who you are. And confidence comes with training. Someone who is “in training” is always learning and applying what they’ve learned. Training includes making some mistakes along the way. Part of the training is recognizing those mistakes and learning from them. Mistakes are OK. Mistakes are expected. Soon by applying your training you’ll begin to recognize them before they happen, and you’ll know the right choices to make. How you ask?
